“Am I Still the Same Person I Was Before I Lost Weight?” (And Other Important Questions That Follow Weight Loss Surgery)

How Did You Lose the Weight?”    “Do You Wish You’d Have Had WLS Earlier in Life?”    “Am I the Same Person I Was Before I Lost Weight?”

Weight loss surgery patients must deal with many challenging physical changes as their body adjusts to its new reality.  While these physical challenges can be significant, it is often the mental, emotional and psychological challenges that make a WLS journey most difficult.   As the saying goes "They operate on your stomach, not your head."

In my case these three questions have followed me through me journey – asked of me by both myself and by my friends, family and even total strangers.  Many WLS patients are a bit apprehensive about fielding these questions – even preferring not to ask them of themselves.

In my presentation, I will highlight why the WLS patient should welcome these questions and how to turn them into your own ‘self-help’ dialog.  My goal is to provide the WLS patient with a new paradigm with which to view their own journey and relate their experiences to others.

It's All About Men and WLS

Men’s Panel Discussions – WLS and Men’s Issues

It’s estimated 280,000 Americans will undergo Weight Loss Surgery this year.  Only 15 percent, 42,000 will be men.  Obesity statistics in the US indicate morbid obesity is not gender specific.  Why are so few men having weight loss surgery?

And when men do have weight loss surgery, they become a higher risk to suffer depression, anxiety, and stress, and to develop eating disorders, transfer addictions, and relationship issues.

Come join a discussion, reserved exclusively for men, and discuss issues we, as male WLS patients, experience daily.  Share your thoughts, experiences, feelings and fears with others also traveling through a similar journey.

Waste=Weight-Discover Internal Harmony - Sherrine Washington

If you remember just ONE THING from my presentation, I hope that you will remember that-Waste=Weight.  Grab a pen and pad and get ready for some serious note-taking!

Call it a taboo topic or not, many weight loss surgery patients suffer from the inability to “take their trash out” aka CONSTIPATION.  Ignoring your eliminative organs could be the reason why that number on your scale is stuck, moving in the wrong direction, or the reason for those uncontrollable cravings that have you searching through your cupboards at night.

Don’t risk turning your inner terrain into a breeding ground full of toxic sludge that can lead to chronic diseases such as Cancer and even Parkinson's disease.

44 million Americans rely on laxatives for elimination (Yikes!). Can we talk?  Join me for a REAL-NO FRILLS -Visual Demo where I teach you the #1 life changing protocol that solved this problem for me while studying at The Anne Wigmore Institute in Puerto Rico.

(Attendees will receive my Brave Girl Cheat Sheet to Wellness including a special bonus valued at over $501  I will also be providing information on cancer-causing ingredient that might be in your favorite protein shake)
    See you there!   -S

WLS Couples: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly! What it's really like to be in a WLS relationship!
Kevin and Jennifer Mahoney: Kevin had RNY Gastric Bypass on 5/6/2012 with Dr. Kim at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital in Portland Oregon. Kevin has struggled with his obesity his entire life. He reached 200+ pounds in grade school. He reached his heaviest weight in 2011 at 365 pounds and knew he needed to make a change or he was going to die. Jennifer had RNY Gastric Bypass on 3/19/2012 with Dr. Kim at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital in Portland Oregon. Like Kevin, Jennifer also struggled with obesity her entire life. She was always the chubby girl but it wasn't until she suffered her first knee injury the weight started coming on rapidly. Her heaviest weight in 2011 was 300 pounds. Kevin and Jennifer met and started dating in high school, Jennifer 15, and Kevin 18 years old. They were married in 2002 and started trying to have a baby. After the second failed IVF treatment they decided that they both needed to do something about their weight before they could proceed with any more fertility treatment. This led them to Weight Loss Surgery. It is Kevin and Jennifer's mission to give back to the WLS community as much as possible and to be there as a resource and support for others going through or have gone through the process.

    Jim and Christian Haney
: Jim had VSG on 9-1-2009 in San Francisco, California at 600+ lbs after a life long struggle with his weight. Christian had her VSG on 9-7-2011 in John’s Creek, Georgia at 254 lbs after progressively gaining more and more weight during college and several failed attempts to lose it. The two met through the Obesity Help website after they were both post op and at goal. Jim came to one of the local Atlanta meet and greets with a friend of his in June of 2012 where the two met for the first time in person. After the meet and greet the two communicated via Facebook and Obesity Help. Jim flew back to Atlanta in November of 2012 to visit with Christian and never really left. Jim moved from California to be with Christian in August of 2013 after practically spending several months in Georgia together. The two got married in September of 2013. They have stayed active in the community and go to local support groups in Georgia as much as possible to pay it forward. Jim’s foot surgery and Christian’s ankle surgery brought on regain for them both which they have worked as a team to battle. Being married to another WLS patient has its advantages and disadvantages but at the end of the day they both blessed to have the support and understanding of someone who has been there and understands.

The Corset Body Lift ®: The weight is over….uncover your curves!

Alexander P. Moya,  M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has dedicated many years of his practice to helping patients who have achieved their weight loss goals but are left with unwanted excess skin.  For many of his patients, it is not only the removal of this skin for practical reasons but also the body contouring for aesthetic reasons that represents the final phase of their weight loss journey.

To help his patients achieve their dream of a beautifully-contoured waistline, Dr. Moya created his own procedure, The Corset Body Lift®, in 2006, after realizing that standard tummy tucks and lower body lifts did not provide his weight loss patients with the most ideal results. The Corset Body Lift® not only targets and reshapes the lower abdomen, but also the upper abdomen, the lower chest, and the upper and lower back, enhancing the entire waistline and figure, regardless of the patient’s overall size or amount of excess skin.  He states “I have spent many hours not only performing the procedure (hundreds of times) but improving upon it and customizing it for each patient.”

The results of Dr. Moya’s Corset Body Lift® have been so remarkable that he has been featured on television as well as in numerous medical magazines and professional journals (Smart Beauty Guide, Plastic Surgery Practice, Cosmetic Surgery Times, and more). His expertise has also been recognized by other weight loss specialists (including bariatric and fellow plastic surgeons), with invitations to present this procedure at both national and international professional society meetings.  As a consultant for Ethicon, Inc. (part of Johnson & Johnson), he has instructed other surgeons across the U.S. on this procedure as well.

Dr. Moya also performs other contouring procedures of the face and body, including arm, breast, chest, thigh, and lower body (“butt”) lifts, all without the need for post-operative drains.  His innovative surgical techniques and use of advanced technologies have provided his patients with the results they deserve and a simpler, more comfortable recovery.

Dr. Moya had joined Geisinger Health System in 2002 upon completion of his training, and after developing its weight loss body contouring program, had served as Director of Geisinger’s Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery. In April 2016, Dr. Moya joined Dr. Ernest Normington in private practice at Lewisburg Plastic Surgery in beautiful central Pennsylvania, where he continues to enjoy sharing his energy and enthusiasm with all of his patients.

Should WLS Post-Ops Drink Alcohol After Surgery?

Should WLS post-ops drink alcohol after surgery? Unlike many of the questions that we have about the changes that happen to the body after bariatric surgery, there is some reasonably good data regarding alcohol’s effect on the post-bariatric patient.

We have the most information regarding alcohol intake after RNY Gastric Bypass.  The effects of alcohol are less clear after Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Banding but are still worrisome enough to warrant extreme caution with alcohol intake after any kind of bariatric surgery.

In reviewing the literature on alcohol use after bariatric surgery, it is obvious that there are still more questions than answers, but a few gems come to light in the research that we do have.

Come hear what those gems are.   Bring your questions, there will be  a short Q & A time with Dr. Shadle.
